SANSKRIT

What is Sanskrit?

“Modern science and ancient wisdom traditions agree that the universe is a symphony of vibrational frequencies.”  Deepak Chopra, MD

Sanskrit (saṃskṛtam) is the ancient language of India, commonly regarded as the mother of the Indo-European language family (including English!).  It is believed to be one of the oldest languages in the world and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.  Sanskrit is the language of the Vedas and the whole yoga tradition and is referred to as the sonic building blocks of all creation.  It is the language of mantra – words of power in resonance with the unseen harmonies making up the matrix of creation.  The Vedas began as an oral tradition that was passed down through generations before finally being written in Vedic Sanskrit.  Scholars disagree about the origin but most agree between 1500-1200 BCE (3520 years ago).

Science agrees that sound is the origin of creation. In Sanskrit, it is called śabda-brahma.  Nature is composed of frequencies, and we live in a vibrational multiverse.  We live in a world of resonance.  “We could say that anything that vibrates in the universe is chanting mantra and speaking Sanskrit, whether it is an atom, a human being or a star.  Mantra is the very life blood of all forms and processes in the world around and within us.  The Sanskrit alphabet emulates these cosmic sound vibrations that we can connect to through a proper understanding and the recitation of its letters.”  David Frawley, Mantra Yoga and Primal Sound.

It is known as the language of the Gods (speech of divine beings) since it energizes and awakens the subtle nervous system – a vital step in realizing the highest goal of Yoga known as samadhi.  Each letter of the alphabet represents a particular type of fundamental vibratory energy.  Together these matrix energies weave the web of cosmic and thus bodily existence (i.e. the microcosm mirrors the macrocosm – as above, so below).  That is, the physical body and the universe at large are produced by the same energy that is expressed in the principle sounds of the sanskrit alphabet, which was developed in the context of spiritual practice and sacred vision. The seed sounds of the alphabet are described as eternal, conscious, living sounds.  They are the roots of the power of speech and it is through the power of words and language, we think, communicate and construct our reality.  Thus, the Sanskrit seed sounds are the structure of consciousness.   The power of each sound affects the unconscious content of the deepest levels of the mind and are believed to purify and lead one toward a reunion with the highest order of consciousness or Source. Swami Vidyadhishananda Giri, describes Sanskrit as “the blueprint of the consciousness of the whole cosmos.”

Sacred origin

Sanskrit is considered a revealed language, a reflection of a deeper underlying reality. Although its exact origins  are not definitively known, it is believed that ancient Sages/Ṛṣis/Seers of ultimate truth in India made the discovery of sanskrit by attaining high states of perception via deep meditation and this expanded consciousness permitted them to see and hear the subtle “strings of code” at the root of creation.  The ‘strings of code’ or sacred sounds the rishis heard were the sanskrit syllables and their combinations.  Thus, the recitation or pronunciation of sanskrit helps one comprehend and experience the principle of spanda, or divine vibration – primordial sound.  As such, sanskrit is a technology or tool for awakening higher states of consciousness, rather than an archaic, dead language.

By learning to intone or pronounce the syllables of the sanskrit alphabet properly and learning to correctly pronounce and chant Veda mantras, one enlivens and awakens the subtle nervous system and can become connected with very subtle levels of awareness.
Many yogic masters say that chanting sanskrit mantras is an essential practice for accessing the higher limbs of the yogic systems.  The practice of yoga is not meant to end at the physical body, but rather it’s designed to deepen awareness of the subtle body and ultimately to lead to discovery of the pure source of innermost Being.

Ancient technology of consciousness

The word “sanskrit” means polished, refined, perfected, sanctified or “well-made.”  These sounds are energies that vibrate, lighting up specific positions/sites in the palate, brain, and subtle body and this is why it is known as an “Ancient technology of Consciousness”.  It is honored for its precision and perfection of its grammar which was codified by the famous sage Panini more than 2500 years ago.  The language was already ancient and widespread by then but there were no standards so Panini delineated a set of sutras, defining the language and its grammar rules and it still serves as the authority and standard for Classical Sanskrit.

In fact, modern Backus-Naur form (BNF) used to describe computer programming languages has strong similarities to these Sanskrit grammar sutras.  The grammar is so precise, it resembles formula or program code.  Panini is quoted as stating, “Whoever knows Sanskrit knows God!”  It offers a felt-sense of God-within.
The body and nervous system are the gateway leading to enlightenment, which is obtained through mastery of hearing the inner, mystical sounds resonant within the CNS.  Many yogic masters say that chanting sanskrit mantras is an essential practice for accessing the higher limbs of the yogic systems.
